It’s incredible… but true! HdV currently has 62 active family plots! Family plots are the spaces we offer to local residents to grow their own produce. The plots are offered in two sizes 10x10 and 10x20 and cost $20 or $30 a year accordingly. Having 62 active plots comes as great news to us since it is the most active plots we’ve had at HdV since our grand opening in 2013. That means there are 62 families in the garden area that now have access to fresh, local, organic produce! And since most of our gardeners participate in our produce trade program and the Inland Valley food swap- even more families in the area are reaping the benefits of healthy eating. However, as much as having 62 active family plots in the garden excites us, the celebration is bittersweet since we have reached capacity in the plots we have to offer- in the community area of the garden. We are currently not offering any new plots in this area but do have a running “waiting list” to keep in touch with interested parties once new plots become available. Any information regarding plots, plot contracts, or the waiting list can be obtained at the garden during our regular work hours- currently everyday 5- 8p.m.
Today marks our 100th blog post! We’ve come a long way from a lot covered in weeds and debris to the awesome community organization we are today! All of us at the Huerta del Valle family would like to send our sincerest thanks everybody who has followed our incredible journey of patience and progress through our blog. Whether you’ve been working side by side with us on the land or simply supporting us online YOU’RE the reason we keep going! In an effort to celebrate our 100th blog post we are reminding everybody that we still have plenty of HdV merchandise for sale! If you still don’t have an HdV shirt or even an HdV calendar now is the time to pick one up. Prices vary but are totally affordable. All merchandise is available for sale at the garden.
Like to compost? We do!! In fact, here at HdV we spent most of our Spring (and early weeks of Summer) working on expanding our ever growing compost heaps! Composting is a slow process that can take up to 6 months for the heaps to reach their dark, nutrient rich, planting potential. As the HdV family continues to increase in members, volunteers, and buyers, having sufficient compost on site is extremely important for the success of all parties involved. Luckily for us, HdV recently received very generous donations of produce from Borg Produce, a wholesale fruit and vegetable distributor here in Ontario to use in our compost and ensure it packed with vitamins and nutrients when it is fed back to the garden plants.
Summer is in full swing and that means one thing… LOTS of fresh summer favorites are available at HdV!!! The warm summer heat has helped our watermelons, bell peppers, tomatoes, and many other crops flourish. If you haven’t stopped by the garden in a while (or ever) summer- when the garden is at its greenest is definitely the time to check us out. Plus, now that our intensive growth area is up and running we are making our fresh fruits and vegetables available to the general public. For a limited time one hour of garden volunteer service can earn you one pound of any fresh produce we have to offer. (and of course you can mix and match.) More information about obtaining produce can be found at the garden or you can call one of our garden manager who are more than happy to answer your questions- Arthur (English) 917-734-8108 or Maria (Spanish) 909-509-2996.
