Still thinking about having your own plot at Huerta del Valle? You’re in luck! HdV officially announced today that Phase 3 will open up on October 1st- offering even more family plots for community members to participate in the program. Currently HdV has 15 family plots in phase 1 and 11 family plots in Phase 2. This week we will measure out the area for Phase 3 to let everybody know how many spaces will be available. We expect plots in Phase 3 will go just as quickly as Phase 1 and Phase 2 did. So, if you are interested in having a plot in Phase 3 don’t wait until October 1st come by the garden this week or early next week to talk to Maria or Arthur about getting on the wait list.

Be good to the land and it will be good to you. These days those words are more true than ever! At Huerta del Valle we take pride in caring for our land. We keep it free of chemicals and pesticides, feed it lots of nutrient rich, organic compost, and give it plenty of water whenever it’s thirsty. In return the land has been so good to all of our community gardeners. Although we’ve already showcased some of our garden crops earlier in the summer the plants just keep on growing and growing that we thought we would showcase some more. Check out our beans, gourds, cucumbers, pumpkins and mushrooms!
With Labor Day marking the “unofficial” end of summer everybody at HdV took a moment to look back on the amazing progress and the many, many accomplishments that we’ve had in the garden these last couple of months. After Phase 1 filled up with fifteen family plots HdV opened up Phase 2 offering eleven more family plots to the community. Despite a little trouble with garden pests the family plots are flourishing at the garden with all sorts of fresh and organic fruits and vegetables. We have even seen significant development along our edible borders with chayote, amaranth, and cacti welcoming visitors to the garden. Our hoop house construction was a great community effort that will help our plants for many seasons to come and our compost heaps keep growing and growing. During the summer months we started planting some trees- that hopefully will bring us some much needed shade next summer and we even started digging out some rows in our intensive growing area. After all of this of course we want to send HUGE ‘thanks’ to all of YOU!!! Despite the sweltering heat we had countless volunteers showing up day in and day out helping with all of the projects. The garden looks beautiful and we know we couldn’t have done it without all of your support. Here’s to the greatness that is yet to come!!
