Many people associate winter with cold weather and gray skies, but the plants at Huerta del Valle are soaking up our great California sun. Thank you to the Pitzer Grove House and Shakedown restaurants as well as the Pitzer dining hall for supporting our farm. Eat our cilantro at Pitzer lunches on Tuesday!

Director Maria Alonso and Maria Mendoza attended the November LA Food Policy Council meeting. They met Will Allen, who works as the CEO of Growing Power, Inc., a farm and community food center in Milwaukee that strives to grow food, to grow minds, and to grow community. The meeting focused on issues of food waste and composting in LA. Composting is a great way to reduce the massive amount of food waste that releases tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Here at Huerta del Valle, we compost hundreds of pounds of food waste every week from our community partner grocery stores: Red Tomatoes Farmer’s Market in Rancho Cucamonga and Tres Amigos in Ontario.
